More than 30 million people in Africa are facing severe food shortages caused by political instability, economic recession, and climate change. In Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen, half a million children are suffering acute malnutrition and one million more are starving. Africa, home to 35 of 48 poorest countries in the world, is deeply troubled by population boom and non-stop conflicts. Political instability has hampered countries’ efforts to tackle water shortages for agriculture cultivation. African leaders are taking drastic actions including subsidizing food price, reforming farming methods, and buying rice for reserve. The UN has called for 5.6 billion in emergency aid for four African nations to prevent a possible humanitarian crisis this year. The UK and the EU have a agreed on a 212 million USD aid package to help 40% of people in South Sudan escape hunger. Japan also announced emergency aid worth 26 million USD to help control the famine that is raging 6 African and Middle East countries. The UN Fund for Children is raising fund to provide food, drinking water, and health, education and protection services for 22 million children.
