(VOVWORLD) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives won 365 seats, a solid majority in the 650-seat House of Commons, in the general election on December 12th. The victory will allow Johnson to form a new government and get Brexit done on January 31st on schedule.

The Conservatives won 39 seats more than it needed to the form a new government. This will give Johnson and the Conservatives the power to take Britain out of the European Union, after being blocked for the past 2 years.
Way clear for a Brexit deal in Parliament
When the election result was announced, Johnson declared Brexit no longer a controversial decision.
Before the election Brexit was in a deadlock. The Conservatives lost their majority in the House of Commons in June, 2017 and subsequently Johnson failed to secure parliamentary approval for a Brexit deal he reached with the EU. Former Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal was rejected three times by Parliament, which led to her resignation.
The Conservatives’ landslide victory opens the door to a Brexit deal that will finally get Parliament’s approval.
Obstacles
But Brexit will not take place smoothly. The EU will not give Britain easy access to the EU market if Johnson insists on building trade barriers and a trade environment very different from the EU.
Johnson wants to conclude negotiations with the EU by next November and begin the new relationship in 2021. EU officials say it’s possible to reach a trade agreement within a year.
Anti-Brexiters in the UK will not just give up. Last Saturday First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said Prime Minister Johnson needs to "face reality" and recognize that the Scottish National Party (SNP) has been given a mandate for a second independence referendum.
