Other Vietnamese cities that have joined the GNLC are Hai Duong and Ho Chi Minh City, who joined in 2015, and Sa Dec in Dong Thap and Vinh in the central province of Nghe An, who joined in 2020.
Vietnamese Ambassador Le Thi Hong Van, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to UNESCO, says that, in order to promote a reading culture, Cao Lanh has introduced learning software, held conferences on education and reading, and encouraged students to get passionate about learning, doing business, studying science and technology, and aspiring toward innovation.
Being a UNESCO Global Learning City will help Cao Lanh attract the investment and human resources it needs to move toward prosperity and sustainability.
The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning launched the GNLC in 2012. Since then the UNESCO Learning City Award has been presented to cities that have made breakthrough progress in promoting equal learning opportunities for all, promoting learning at home and in the community, facilitating learning for work and learning in the workplace, expanding the use of advanced learning technologies, enhancing the quality and inclusiveness of learning, and promoting a lifelong learning culture.
UNESCO recognition for Cao Lanh will create new opportunities for Cao Lanh residents to exchange ideas, knowledge, and experience with other cities in the network and with UNESCO experts.
