(VOVworld)- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in Paris, France for the 21st Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21). Vietnam’s participation demonstrates its strong commitment to international efforts to cope with climate change.

Vietnam joins international efforts to cope with climate change

COP21, one of the largest global conferences this year involves 50,000 delegates from governments, intergovernmental organizations, UN agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) around the world. The main goal of the event is to adopt a new global framework on climate change in the post-2020 period, to be called the Paris Agreement 2015. It is hoped that all parties to the agreement will commit to cutting emissions to keep the average temperature rise worldwide to less than 2 degree C by the end of the 21st century.

If the Paris Agreement is adopted, it will be the first binding agreement in 20 years of UN negotiations on climate that involves the participation of major green house gas emitting countries, both developed and developing.

Vietnam a leader in implementing its report on intended nationally-determined contributions (INDC) to cope with climate change

As one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, Vietnam is acutely aware of the effects climate change can have on development. The Vietnamese government has work hard to design and implement national programs and policies to cope with climate change while participating in major international treaties and contributing to international negotiations on climate change.

Vietnam’s ministries, sectors, research agencies, NGOs, international organizations, and development partners have worked closely to produce the report. In the report, Vietnam vows to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 8% by 2030 using its own internal resources, and pledges an additional 25 percent if it receives international support.   Vietnam also vows to carry out more adaptation activities to increase its resilience to climate change. In a speech at a senior officials meeting at COP 21, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung affirmed the Vietnamese government’s strong commitment to international efforts to cope with climate change through specific activities.

Proactive in efforts to cope with climate change

On the sidelines of COP 21, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will hold bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries and international organizations to promote cooperation in climate change adaptation. Prime Minister Dung will co-chair a dialogue on coping with climate change in the Mekong River Delta which will involve leaders of regional countries, partner countries and the World Bank.

Prime Minister Dung’s attendance at COP 21 demonstrates Vietnam’s proactive international integration and its commitment to international efforts to cope with climate change.
