Closing the government’s monthly meeting for June, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the Vietnamese Party, State and government are determined to mobilize the combined strength of the whole political system, the army and people, ministries, sectors, and enterprises to achieve the set targets. He stressed the need to bring into play dynamism, creativity, reform, responsibility, and discipline.

Not to adjust the GDP growth target

Despite several difficulties in the first half of this year, Vietnam still has the potential to achieve its set targets. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development urged Mekong Delta provinces to expand rice and vegetable production by 25,000 ha, increase aquaculture, particularly shrimp production and develop measures to reduce production costs and increase productivity. The Ministry of Industry and Trade says Vietnam’s export, especially of agricultural and fishery produce is likely to increase 8.5% in the second half of this year.  To help enterprises access credit, the State bank needs to control inflation, stabilize the macro-economy, and require its banks to reduce interest rates. The Vietnam Fatherland Front wants to establish a Steering Committee for Cooperatives to boost the role of cooperatives in new rural development. Prime Minister Phuc said through the resolve of the government, ministries, sectors, localities, enterprises and the public, Vietnam will achieve a GDP growth rate of 6.7% this year.

Strengthening the government

To achieve the set targets, the government is determined to enhance its performance, promote transparency, fight corruption, and strengthen its discipline. The government aims to improve the business environment to encourage enterprises and the public to contribute to national economic growth. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said: “It’s necessary to increase transparency and responsibility, eliminate the subsidy mechanism, and prevent group interests. We also need to accelerate socialization and mobilize the participation of the private sector. The state sector needs to be scrutinized and work more effectively. The private sector is an important driver of growth and job creation. Health care, culture, and science and technology sectors and localities need to develop measures to increase the participation of the public and enterprises”.

Prime Minister Phuc said the government has implemented a number of new policies to boost economic growth. Those include resolutions and decrees on improving the business environment, guidance in implementing the revised Investment Law and accelerating administrative reforms. The Prime Minister said: “To improve the investment environment, ministries, sectors, and localities should refer to government resolutions 01, 19 and 35. It’s important to speed up the disbursement process, and help farmers restore agricultural production, especially in the Mekong Delta, the south central region and the central highlands. We are helping farmers increase production to boost economic growth and stabilize social security. We also need to take advantage of and expand export and local consumption markets”.

Mr. Phuc stressed the importance of improving productivity and competitiveness and asked ministries and localities to develop specific action programs and promote startups to achieve Vietnam’s growth target.
