An international workshop on smart tourism development was recently held in Ho Chi Minh City. Participants said smart tourism development has challenged the city to adapt to the digital transformation now that smart tourism has become a criterion of sustainable development and national competitiveness. Associate Professor Doctor Tran Minh Triet of Ho Chi Minh City’s University of Science said the city should adopt appropriate policies and collaborate with government agencies to build a tourism database.
“Ho Chi Minh City is determined to develop a smart tourism strategy that takes into consideration both challenges and opportunities. I hope many people will get involved in this effort,” Triet said.
Ho Chi Minh City was one of the first localities to reveal its smart city plan, which focuses on smart tourism development. The city’s tourism sector has achieved annual growth of 11 to 12% thanks to effective management, tourism promotion, and communications. Nguyen Thien Nhan, Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee, said the city should adopt a comprehensive view and learn from other countries. Sectors should cooperate with foreign organizations, businesses, and experts.
“We need a 10-year plan for tourism. We should complete a tourism strategy by November that includes a smart tourism component, ” Mr. Nhan said.
The 4th Industrial Revolution has greatly affected the global supply chain. Localities should quickly grasp opportunities, promote e-commerce, and generate new tourism services to improve their tourism trademarks and competitiveness.
