(VOVworld)- India has strengthened its security following a terror attack at the Panthankot Air Base in northern India and a series of terror threats at public places over the past few days. The increase of terror attacks seriously threatens India’s security.

A terror attack at the Panthakot Air Base in Punjab on Saturday killed at least 8 Indian soldiers and injured 20 others. 4 terrorists were also killed. Indian authorities and media blamed the attack on the Jaish E- Mohammed rebel group, who is based in the Pakistan- controlled Kashmir region. A high alert was immediately set up along the Pathankot-Jammu highway. Indian ground forces were also deployed to ensure security for the highway.

One day later, a number of trains in New Delhi were delayed or diverted due to a bomb threat at the New Delhi railway station. Security was intensified in the capital city after two gunmen of the Jaish-e-Mohammed group were suspected of attempting to attack key leaders and take hostages. A senior police official said vigilance was heightened in many places around New Delhi. Local police was asked to stay on high alert. Task forces were deployed in various areas to timely respond to emergency cases.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired an extraordinary meeting on Sunday with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Secretary of External Relations Subrahmanyam Jashankar and other officials. The Indian Prime Minister condemned the attack at the Pathankot air base in Punjab and described terrorists as anti-India elements. Modi said India is able to cope with any challenge. The Indian Foreign Ministry asked Pakistan to contain terrorism and anti-India organizations amidst efforts to improve bilateral ties. The attack took place one week after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Pakistan to meet his counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

The Pakistani Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said the Pakistani government will exert efforts to improve ties with India. Aziz said Secretaries of External Relations of both countries will meet in Islamabad on January 15 to work out a roadmap for bilateral comprehensive dialogue in the next six months.
