Founded in 1971 by Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab, the WEF has become one of the most influential forums on national, regional and global policies. The most important event of the WEF is the annual meeting held in January in Davos. The Davos forum, which gathers heads of state and business leaders from around the world, helps to forge connectivity and cooperation.

Tighter cooperation

This year’s forum is themed “Responsive and Responsible Leadership”. There will be  more than 300 sessions on improving global governance, coping with insecurity and crises, promoting inclusive and sustainable growth amid global economic slowdown, economic restructuring, and social reform. 

Since Vietnam and the WEF established ties in 1989, senior Vietnamese leaders have frequently attended the WEF’s annual meetings in Davos and East Asia. The Forum’s Managing Director Phillipp Roesler visited Vietnam 3 times in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Vietnam hosted the World Economic Forum Mekong Conference last October to promote the sub-region to international groups.  

Strong message on Vietnam economic outlook

Currently, 11 Vietnamese corporations and groups are WEF members, including FPT Group, VinGroup, and the military-run telecom provider Viettel.

Vietnam, an emerging economy in a dynamic East Asian region and an important partner of the World Economic Forum, is eager to implement the New Vision for Agriculture initiative which aims to ensure food security and sustainable and environmentally- friendly agriculture through market access and alignment of government, businesses, and farmers, particularly through public-private partnership. WEF experts say Vietnam has favorable conditions, like a young, creative, diligent, and dynamic workforce, to improve its national competitiveness.

At the Davos meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will send a strong message of Vietnam’s economic prospects and its hosting of APEC Year 2017.
