Reforming core issues with students being in the center
Minister Pham Vu Luan said that radical and comprehensive reform of education and training is carried out on major and key issues concerning the education sector’s targets, methodology, mechanism and policies. It is important to develop education and training in association with meeting the demands of socio-economic development and national defense and scientific and technological advances. The ultimate goal of education and training development is to raise people’s knowledge, improve human resource training, and foster Vietnamese talents in order to bring into play their potential and creativity. Minister Luan said:“We change our awareness and actions in educational organization in regard to perspectives, targets and methodology. We will change the current heavy-knowledge education to another one, which promotes self-learning. We will change from encouraging pupils to calculate correctly and quickly into helping them to be more creative. We will change from educating them to become writers, computer technicians or musicians into enhancing their senses to perceive the beauty of literature, poems, music, and paintings. We will build up a generation of self-reliant people who are confident to write, present, express and defend their opinions and who known how to listen and perceive good ideas from their colleagues, classmates and people around them to enrich their intellectuality and working capability”.
Minister Luan said that teaching and learning has always been the way that teachers handed out their knowledge to students and now this traditional way will be replaced by one that focuses on enhancing students’ personality and capability so that they can learn by themselves. By so doing, students’ dynamism and talents will be discovered and promoted.
Reforming teachers is a key factor
In addition to reforming the perspective in education, curriculum, and books, radical and comprehensive education reform also focuses on reforming teachers. To this end, it is necessary to reform teachers’ training schools and training work and improve the capacity of teachers and educational managers. Professor Pham Tat Dong is Vice President of Vietnam’s Learning Promotion Association: “To reform education, all teachers’ training schools need to reform their curriculums to ensure the training for teachers is close to training needs in general education at all levels. The training curriculum must match the educational reform orientations, so teachers at all levels will be capable of meeting education demands”.
Minister Luan said that educational reform requires teachers and students to adapt to the changes of international integration because this is what many other developing countries in the world are doing.
