The golden Oscar statuette
(VOVworld) – The 89th Academy Awards (Oscars) ceremony will take place Sunday night (local time) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. Six months earlier, workers at the Polich Tallix foundry began casting golden trophies in preparation for the ceremony.

60 trophies have been cast since last September. Each Oscar is 34cm tall and has a black base depicting a roll of film. A winner’s nameplate is added and engraved after the ceremony. John Menzie and other workers at Polich Tallix foundry know every detail of each statuette and polish it by hand. Menzie finds it interesting to watch his glossy products being handed out to the winners at the high-profile televised ceremony. He remembers that at last year’s ceremony, when Leonardo Di Caprio walked up onto the stage for the best actor trophy, Menzie was sure the trophy given to the actor was made by him.
Polich Tallix foundry took over the job of casting the Oscar trophies from a firm in Chicago. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences asked the foundry to create a statuette that looks more real than the 1929 sculpture. Daniel Plonski, 3D digital specialist for the foundry, created a model on a 3D printer and used as a basis for a ceramic mold. The statue was cast in tin and copper and then gold-plated.
