170 State leaders from around the world will gather at the UN summit, making it the largest UN conference since the UN Summit to approve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2000. Summit participants will formally adopt a new global development agenda, which will serve as a foundation for sustainable development through 2030. The agenda, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets, is the result of active negotiations among UN member nations, including Vietnam, over the last two years.

Vietnam achieves a number of MDGs

Vietnam has over the past few years recorded some important socio-economic achievements. Vietnam’s macro-economy and monetary market have been stabilized and its GDP growth rate in the first half of this year was 6.28%, the highest rate in five years. Vietnam has basically completed the Millennium Development Goals set out by the UN in 2000. Vietnam has eliminated extreme poverty and hunger, universalized primary education, improved gender equality and women’s prestige and capacity, reduced children mortality rates, improved reproductive health, prevented HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensured environmental sustainability, and strengthened the global partnership for development. Vietnam’s achievements, especially in eliminating extreme poverty and hunger since 2003, 13 years ahead of schedule, have been widely recognized by the international community.

Vietnam has strengthened and developed multi-faceted cooperation with a number of world powers and partner countries, boosted regional connectivity, and enhanced its relations with the UN and international organizations within the UN framework. Vietnam has proactively participated in UN activities, introduced practical initiatives, and worked effectively toward the common goals of the UN. Since 2006, Vietnam was one of 8 countries that piloted the UN’s Unified Action Initiative and is successfully implementing this Initiative. Vietnam’s participation in UN development cooperation and peacekeeping activities has been praised by other countries.

Vietnam contributes to global issues

Vietnam has contributed to the negotiations for the UN summit and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Vietnamese State leader will present a report on Vietnam’s 15-year implementation of UN Millennium Development Goals for a World with no one left behind. President Sang and leaders of other countries will adopt the Sustainable Development Agenda, take part in a UN Peacekeeping Operations meeting, a meeting on gender equality and a meeting with the UN Secretary General. Sang will also meet with the Presidents and Prime Ministers of countries that have trade and economic relations with Vietnam.
