The Vietnamese language is a precious asset of Vietnam. For 6 million overseas Vietnamese in 130 countries and territories, Vietnam is a means to maintain and spread their native culture, helping them to preserve their Vietnamese cultural identity and become confident in their development and integration into their resident country.
September 8 has been designated as a day to honor Vietnamese in the overseas Vietnamese community across the world. Multiple activities have been held including setting up bookshelves of Vietnamese books in Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Japan, launching a journey to seek and honor an Ambassador of Vietnamese language abroad in 2023, an art program called “Beloved Vietnamese”, and a seminar to honor the Vietnamese language in 2023, which was held in hybrid formats annually in many countries.
Vietnamese learning courses and Vietnamese studies have been promoted in many countries including Italy, Russia, Germany, the UK and the US. Many foreign scholars are fluent in Vietnamese and have a profound knowledge of Vietnam.
Doctor Nguyen Quoc Hung, Director of the Russia-Vietnam Cooperation Support Fund called “Tradition and Friendship”, said: “Recently we set up the fund “Enlightenment” to promote culture and education development and studies in Russian and Vietnamese. We plan to organize a professional translation contest for Russian students in Universities where Vietnamese is taught.”
In addition to establishing Vietnamese faculties, many countries including Laos, Cambodia and Russia have sent their students to Vietnam to learn Vietnamese.
Associate Professor Doctor Nguyen Van Chinh of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi National University, said: "Most of the foreign students in my university have studied Vietnamese for one or two years in their home countries. They all love Vietnamese. One common thing among them is that they want to engage in Vietnamese-related businesses.”
