(VOVWORLD) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo will visit Vietnam from Tuesday to Wednesday at the invitation of President Tran Dai Quang to strengthen cooperation and friendship.

During President Widodo’s state visit, the two countries will review their strategic partnership over the last five years and create an action plan for the next five years.
Strategic partnership expanded
Since Vietnam and Indonesia established a strategic partnership in 2013, they have signed more than 30 cooperative agreements in various areas and promoted cooperation in forums like the Committee for Science and Technology Cooperation and the Committee for Bilateral Cooperation.
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong visited Indonesia last year to strengthen the relationship between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle.
The two sides have worked closely at international forums like the UN, the Non-Aligned Movement, and ASEAN and agree on the importance of maintaining solidarity within ASEAN, which plays a central role in dealing with regional and global economic and political issues.
Two-way trade was valued at more than 6.4 billion USD last year. Vietnam exports to Indonesia mobile phones and parts, minerals, steel products, and processed and manufactured goods. Indonesia is Vietnam’s 4th largest trade partner and 5th largest investor in ASEAN.
Opportunities for bilateral cooperation
During President Widodo’s visit, the two sides will seek ways to promote coordination in politics and diplomacy. They share similar views on regional security and have collaborated closely in the UN Security Council.
Next year, Indonesia will be a non-permanent member the UN Security Council. Vietnam and Indonesia agree on the importance of settling East Sea sissue in a peaceful manner based on legal processes and international law including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
