The 5th and 6th plenums of the 13th Party Central Committee made major decisions: mapping out an orientation of the National Master Plan for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050, strengthening industrialization and modernization, reforming the Party's leadership, and building and perfecting the socialist rule-of-law State of Vietnam. Other decisions included policies and laws on land, agriculture, farmers, rural areas, collective economy, and the quality of Party members in the new period. The Politburo issued 6 Regional Resolutions on socio-economic development, national defense and security by 2030, with a vision to 2045, which creates a high consensus of awareness and action among the entire Party, people and army. On this basis, the National Assembly and the Government have devised specific programs, projects, and decisions, that open up opportunities for sustainable, comprehensive development in the immediate and long term.
3. Party building and rectification, anti-corruption addressed aggressively
In 2022, the fight against corruption and misconduct was intensified and closely combined with Party building and rectification, and anti-degradation in political ideology, morality and lifestyle. The inauguration of the Steering Committee for corruption prevention and control in all 63 cities and provinces paid off.
Violating Party members and cadres were disciplined in a careful, objective, and fair manner in accordance with Party regulations and State laws. Some 2,500 cases of corruption and crimes of economic and power abuse were prosecuted, including the serious offenses committed at the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Viet A Company, the FLC Group, Tan Hoang Minh, the AIC Company, and the Van Thinh Phat Group. The fight against corruption, wastefulness, and misconduct has bolstered the public’s trust in the Party and the regime.
4. Diplomacy elevates national profile

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s official visit to China from October 30 to November 1 was a great success, furthering Vietnam-China relations. Other important overseas trips in 2022 were State visits to the Republic of Korea and Indonesia by President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, visits to the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and visits to Hungary, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines by National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.
Vietnam actively and responsibly participated in regional and global forums including ASEAN, the ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the UN.
2022 saw the successful organization of a Friendship Year between Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Vietnam continued to uphold its foreign policy of openness, creating and maintaining a peaceful and stable environment for stronger national development and greater international reputation.
5. Vietnam elected to UN Human Rights Council

On October 11, Vietnam was elected for the second time to the UN Human Rights Council, for the 2023-2025 term, at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. This reflects the international community’s recognition of Vietnam’s strong commitments to promoting and protecting human rights. Assuming the new role, Vietnam will have the opportunity to contribute to the promotion of all human rights on the basis of objectivity, cooperation, and dialogue, better guaranteeing people’s rights in all fields.
6. Vietnam successfully hosts 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games)
Vietnam successfully hosted the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31), whose slogan was "For a stronger Southeast Asia", from May 12 to 23. After 14 days of impressive competition, Vietnam topped the medal tally with 205 golds, 125 silvers, and 116 bronze medals. Vietnam ensured that the SEA Games were fair and open, glorifying the noble sportsmanship and solidarity of the ASEAN community. Vietnam made a strong impression as a friendly, hospitable, caring, fully recovered and growing ASEAN member state.
7. Capital market and real estate in tumult
2022 was a tumultuous year for real estate, corporate bonds, securities, and petroleum markets. The stock market experienced abnormal fluctuations, rallying to a record high in the first months of the year, but going into reverse and plunging in the final months. Affected by the world market, a domestic gasoline price hike and a supply disruption forced many petrol stations to close or shorten their hours. This called for more aggressive and decisive resolution in 2023.
8. Drug and medical supply shortage hurts treatment
Many hospitals across Vietnam suffered a prolonged shortage of drugs, chemicals, equipment and medical supplies for many reasons, including problematic documents related to procurement and bidding for drugs and equipment. This situation has affected the quality of medical examination and treatment, and social security, and should be urgently addressed by the Government, the Ministry of Health, and other agencies.
9. Building systems of national value, cultural value, family value, Vietnamese human standards
2022 marked one year of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s conclusions at the national cultural conference on implementing the 13th National Party Congress Resolution. A symposium entitled “systems of national value, cultural value, family value, Vietnamese human standards in the new period” was held in Hanoi on November 29. A workshop on building institutions, policies, and resources for cultural development was held in Bac Ninh province on December 17.
Following the 2021 national cultural conference, these events show the determination of the Party, State, and the whole society to build an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity, so that culture will truly be an endogenous strength, spiritual foundation, and motivation for national development in line with the 13th National Party Congress.
10. National digital transformation reinforced

On April 22, the Prime Minister issued a decision designating October 10 as the National Digital Transformation Day. 2022 was a successful year for building a digital government, a digital economy, a digital society, and e-transactions. Digital transformation has been popularized by ministries, sectors, and localities. A Resolution of the Party Central Committee’s 6th plenum officially designated digital transformation as a breakthrough that will accelerate national industrialization and modernization.
