Young Vietnamese celebrate Christmas

(VOVWORLD) - Christmas is no longer just for Vietnamese Christians. It’s now celebrated nationwide and is much loved by young Vietnamese.

Shortly before and during Christmas, big churches across Vietnam become popular venues for many, especially the young. Ahead of Christmas, Hanoi’s churches have been decorated with coloured lights. The Christmas atmosphere warms up as churches bring out their decorative lights, nativity scenes, Christmas trees and statues. Friends gather near St. Joseph’s Cathedral in downtown Hanoi to play and take group photos.

Nguyen Quang Huy lives in Hanoi’s Tay Ho district: “My friends and I often come to St. Joseph’s cathedral to take group photos and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere. Afterwards we may have dinner together and go see a movie.”

Christmas is an occasion for expressing affection toward loved ones by giving them cards and gifts. Many young Vietnamese go to souvenir shops to find interesting gifts for their loved ones. Popular items include Santa Claus hats, Rudolph headbands, teddy bears, and Christmas cards.

Nguyen Mai Khanh lives in Hanoi’s Dong Da district: “On this occasion, I often buy gifts and decorative items for my family. I will go to Hanoi center to have fun with my friends.”

On Hanoi streets at Christmas, young people walk slowly, holding hands and sharing warm smiles. Everyone wants to enjoy a peaceful Christmas full of love and joy.
