(VOVWORLD) - Over more than 6 decades of operation, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) and its affiliates have never experienced any major incidents affecting the environment, ecology, and people. This is considered a miracle in Vietnam’s oil and gas sector.

Oil and gas exploration and exploitation, which are mainly conducted at sea, involve more complicated environmental issues and solutions including oil spill response, and waste and waste water management.
Petrovietnam has built an environment, health, and safety system (EHS) which strictly complies with Vietnam’s environment law and international conventions that Vietnam participates in while continuously upgrading technologies to minimize risks to the environment.
With the motto “Environmental protection associated with oil and gas production culture” Petrovietnam has constantly updated its EHS policy and popularized it to all affiliates which in 2021 organized a wide range of activities in response to Action Month for the Environment, World Environment Day, and International Day for Biological Diversity despite the devastating impact of COVID-19.
Movements have been launched to encourage Petrovietnam employees to clean the environment, plant trees, and collect waste at the workplace.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s project to plant 1 billion new trees, Petrovietnam plans to plant 3 million new trees across the group in the 2022-2025 period.
Surveying the environment before and after oil and gas drilling is part and parcel in any project implemented by Petrovietnam and contractors. Environmental Impact Assessment reports are always made and plans to minimize impact on the environment are developed, particularly when implementing projects in areas such as marine reserves, national parks, biosphere reserves, and areas inhabited by animals and plants listed in the Red Book.
Petrovietnam is always committed to minimizing and treating waste in accordance with Vietnamese and international standards and minimizing other impacts such as noise and vibration.

The group has worked closely with international organizations including PSA, NCA, and KLIF to fine-tune regulations on occupational safety and health, oil spill response and environmental protection. Fully equipped EHS teams have been set up in Petrovietnam’s affiliates. Some have been provided with equipment meeting international standards.
Ensuring a sound EHS system has contributed significantly to Petrovietnam’s successful offshore projects and created a solid foundation for the group to move forward and secure sustainable development.
