Mu Cang Chai district is located at the foot of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, approximately 280km from Hanoi in the northwestern province of Yen Bai.
Mu Cang Chai’s terraced rice fields were praised as one of the world’s 20 most colorful places by New York-based magazine Conde Nast Traveler last April.
The most famous terraced rice fields are in the communes of La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, and Ze Xu Phinh.
Locals have been cultivating these terraced fields for centuries.
The terraced rice fields are most beautiful during the months of April and May and in September and October.
Locals cultivate the lower fields to produce their spring crop.
The fall crop of September and October produces the highest rice yield.
