PM Chinh’s bilateral meetings in US in the spotlight
(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met a number of US and ASEAN leaders as well as leaders of international organisations during his May 11-17 working visit to the United States and the UN headquarters to garner support for Vietnam’s development goals.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets US President Joe Biden at the White House on May 12 where they agree the two countries have overcome the pain of the past war and cooperated closely together to develop their comprehensive partnership in a substantively and effective manner. |
He also meets with Patrick Leahy, president pro tempore of the US Senate during his stay in Washington D.C. for the ASEAN-US special summit. He highly appreciates the Senate and Senator Patrick Leahy personally strengthening the bipartisan consensus in favour of the relations with Vietnam, as well as in cooperation with Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of the past war. |
He holds bilateral meetings with a number of ASEAN leaders, including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen (L). The two PMs agree to promote the exchange of high-level delegations and organize practical activities to mark 55 years of the Vietnam – Cambodia diplomacy and during the Friendship Year between the two counties in 2022. |
The two sides vow to accelerate the border demarcation and border marker planting work and promote trade-investment and tourism cooperation, especially among border localities. |
Meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the two leaders consent to further co-operation in post-pandemic economic recovery, including in bolstering the digital economy, the green economy, and the circular economy. |
The two countries seek to further expand the chain of Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP) in Vietnam and work together in order to make the best use of new-generation free trade agreements, such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). |
PM Chinh and his Lao counterpart Phankham Viphavanh rejoice at the positive development of the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive co-operation between the two countries. |
Both sides agree to hold various activities in 2022 during the Solidarity and Friendship Year between Vietnam and Laos, and to mark 60 years of diplomatic ties and 45 years of the Laos - Vietnam Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. |

The PM suggests that the IMF seek to help Vietnam with consultations in ensuring continued macro-economic stability, whilst developing a transparent, sustainable capital market, controlling inflation, developing logistics, along with utilising technological innovations, digital transformation, initiating a climate change response, and energy transition. |
While receiving Amina J. Mohammed, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, the PM said Vietnam is working hard to achieve the target of becoming an industrialised country with high income by 2045. It has high hopes for greater support from the UN, including in the implementation of the national digital transformation programme by 2025, with a vision towards 2030. |
Meeting with Catherine Russel, executive director of UNICEF, Vietnamese Government chief said the country has cherished co-operation with UNICEF over the past 40 years and Vietnam, from a recipient of humanitarian assistance, has become a trusted partner of the UN and UNICEF on many fronts. |
At a meeting in New York May 16, PM Pham Minh Chinh and UN General Assembly president Abdulla Shahid share the view on the necessity of intensifying multilateralism and international co-operation as a means of coping with global challenges, especially epidemics and climate change. |
At a meeting with Achim Steiner, administrator of the UNDP, PM Chinh requests that the UNDP provide additional technical assistance to achieve energy transition partnerships with G7 countries and help mobilise financial support for climate change response programmes. |
