(VOVWORLD) -For the past five years, Fisheries Surveillance Detachment No. 2 of Vung Tau city has trained search and rescue operations, carried out ship maintenance and repairs, and explained maritime laws to fishermen, said the detachment’s Party Committee Secretary Ngo Dang Hoai on Monday.

The primary mission of the detachment is to patrol, control, and protect fishing grounds and designated management areas, focusing on the DK1 and DK2 waters, the sea areas bordering Malaysia, the Vietnam-Indonesia continental shelf border, and the historical waters of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Over the past five years, the detachment has carried out more than 500 sea patrols and coordinated with other forces to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Mr. Hoai said: "In recent years, we have worked with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in coastal provinces to improve awareness of the law enforcement. We explain maritime law at fishing ports, and through sea patrols and inspections. Experienced officers are assigned to educate the community and discourage illegal fishing practices."
In the last five years the detachment has rescued some 400 distressed fishermen at sea.
