COVID-19: Russia receives orders for Avifavir from over 50 countries
(VOVWORLD) - Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) CEO Kirill Dmitriev on Saturday said more than 50 countries worldwide have ordered Avifavir, a Russian-made drug, to treat Covid-19.
Brazil and other Latin American countries, which have recorded high numbers of Covid-19 cases, will be in a priority list to receive the medicine early. Avifavir is Russia's first COVID-19 drug, licensed by Russia’s Ministry of Health in late May. It has proven effective in treating respiratory diseases caused by novel coronavirus in 90% of its trials.
More than 560,000 people have died from the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak as of July 12, 2020. There are currently 12.8 million confirmed cases in 213 countries and territories, according to Worldometers.info.
The US has recorded over 66,000 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the highest number since the outbreak started, raising the total cases to 3.2 million. The US is among countries hardest hit by the outbreak, followed by Brazil and China.
In a related development, President Donald Trump paid a visit to wounded service members at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Saturday and wore a mask after months of refusing to be seen doing so in public. President Trump told the press that it’s great thing to wear a mask as he left the White House the same day.
