The pontoon bridge has replaced the Phong Chau bridge which collapsed in the wake of Typhoon Yagi that hit the northern region earlier this month. 20 days after the collapse, Brigade 249 has completed a 60-ton PMP pontoon bridge, 400m downstream from the Phong Chau bridge on the Red River.

Traffic on the bridge is allowed daily from 6am to 10pm. After that, the bridge segments are removed to let ships pass while the engineering team inspects and reinforces the pontoon bridge at the end of each day.

Once the bridge opens to traffic, the local government will work with relevant agencies to manage traffic, maintain security, and ensure smooth travel. Phu Tho's transport department has proposed building a new 1km bridge at the site of the collapsed one.
