President of the National Economics University, Professor, Dr. Pham Hong Chuong said social security goals are the key in a country’s sustainable development. In recent years, the Vietnamese government has made important steps to create a foundation for expanding social security coverage, which has been mentioned in the revised Law on Social Insurance, revised Law on Health Insurance, and revised Law on Employment.

These amendments will bring Vietnam closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to be in line with International Labour Standards (ILS) and international practices. Balanced investment in both economic growth and new social policies will help Vietnam achieve its goal of becoming a upper-middle-income country by 2030 and universal coverage.

Andre Gama, Director of Social Security Program, ILO Vietnam, stressed the need of policy actions to strengthen the social security system and adapt to changes, especially in countries and territories most vulnerable to climate change.
