(VOVworld) – Representatives from the Syrian government and opposition have begun negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland under the mediation of UN special envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi.

On Thursday, Mr. Brahimi held separate, closed meetings with both sides to determine approaches for the direct negotiations.
Observers predict that because both sides don’t want to make concessions, Mr. Brahimi will have to seek short-term agreements including cease-fires in some areas, more freedom to deliver humanitarian goods to disputed areas, and the exchange of prisoners.
Mr. Brahimi said there were signs that the two sides were ready to discuss these issues.
