Lebanese police fired into the air and used tear gas on Sunday to repel protesters trying to storm the premier’s office, amid more calls for him to resign after a top security official was killed by a car bomb on Friday, which injured 130 people.

Sunday’s funeral of General Wissam al-Hassan had been billed as a protest against outside interference but quickly turned into anger at Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

The Premier has submitted his resignation letter but President Michel Suleiman rejected it. According to the Prime Minister’s website, more than 15 security officers were wounded when they tried to bloc protestors outside the premier’s office.
