Vietnam and Myanmar to raise bilateral trade to half a billion USD

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has concluded a visit to Myanmar where he also attended the 4th Greater Mekong Sub-region Summit. During talks on Wednesday, Prime Minister Dung and Myanmar’s President Thein Sein agreed to bring two-way trade turnover to 500 million USD by 2015. President Thein Sein said Myanmar encourages Vietnamese enterprises to invest in its agriculture, construction of industrial zones, transport infrastructure, hotels, and mining. Both leaders emphasized the need to boost cooperation in other areas such as aviation, tourism, telecommunications, diplomacy, security and defense. Prime Minister Dung said ‘I would like to extend our sincere thanks for the warm reception the Myanmar President, Government and people have reserved for the Vietnamese delegation. I think this visit is a good opportunity for us to review our cooperation and work out measures to further promote bilateral relations’.

The leaders affirmed the determination to contribute to building a united and strong ASEAN Community by 2015. They also agreed to cooperate with countries involved to sustainably use the Mekong River’s water resources, support the full implementation of the ASEAN-China Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea for peace, stability and marine security in the region.
