China's provocative actions in the East Sea

The messages provided an update on developments in the East Sea. China’s illegal deployment of oil rig Haiyang 981 in Vietnam’s waters has caused escalating tensions there. On May 26, a Chinese vessel caused the sinking of a Vietnamese fishing boat, which was operating in its traditional fishing ground near Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago. The diplomatic note once again requested that China immediately withdraw its oil rig from Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, halt all illegal actions, obstructions and provocations against Vietnamese ships, punish lawbreakers and compensate Vietnam for its losses. The Vietnamese delegation rejected false allegations China made in the diplomatic note its delegation sent on Monday to international organizations and other representative delegations in Geneva. Vietnam’s diplomatic note highlighted the policies and goodwill of Vietnam in pursuing peaceful solutions on the basis of international law and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and called on countries and international organizations to protest China’s illegal actions.
