Vietnam ready to share experiences in agriculture, rural development

(VOVworld)- Strategies and measures to strengthen food security and reduce poverty in the region were high on the agenda of the ongoing Asia Pacific regional conference of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Vietnam.  Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat told the media on Thursday that presentations at the conference have focused on initiatives and solutions to ensure food security and reduce poverty in rural areas of regional countries. Minister Phat said the Vietnamese government is ready to share experience and cooperate with other countries in agricultural and rural development. He added as a leading rice exporter in Asia, Vietnam will not set a rice exporting quota. "The Vietnamese economy is following the market mechanism. Criteria for rice exports are set as orientations. It does not mean that Vietnam will set a quota for rice export. The volume of rice export largely depends on the demands of domestic and foreign markets", said Phat.

A FAO representative said that in face of the negative impacts of climate change, the organization was promoting a new approach to agricultural production, applying effective new technologies to ensure sustainable rice production.
