A national unity government was sworn in Saturday in Yemen, paving the way for 3 months of power transfer until a new election. The 34-member administration led by Prime Minister Mohammed Basindawa is made up of an almost equal number of opposition and ministers loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon yesterday appreciated the move as an important milestone in Yemen’s power transfer. The unity government is scheduled to hold an election in February, which will appoint Vice President Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi as President in two years as defined in the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative to solve the political crisis.
