Phan Huynh Dieu, revered musician of Vietnamese revolutionary music

(VOVworld) – Phan Huynh Dieu was considered one of the most renowned musicians of Vietnam’s revolutionary music. His compositions, whose melodies and lyrics embrace Vietnamese folk music, cover many themes: love, comradeship, and love for the homeland. Ngoc Nga reports:

Phan Huynh Dieu was also an outstanding musician of Vietnam’s contemporary music. His love for the homeland was a major source of inspiration for many of his works including Trau Cau “Betel and areca”, Doan ve quoc quan “National guards”, and Mua dong binh sy “Winter and soldiers”. Musician Pham Ngoc Khoi, Vice President of the Vietnam Musicians’ Association, said: “Musician Phan Huynh Dieu’s songs written in the 1940s are linked with Vietnam’s history. These songs embrace folk tunes, making them everlasting. His songs will, perhaps, represent new classic works in Vietnam.”

Musician Phan Huynh Dieu was considered a king of setting music to poems, many of which have been applauded by the public. These include Nhung nguoi da chet “The deceased” by Te Hanh, Dieu buon “Sad melody” by Huy Can, Bong cay Konia The Shade of Konia tree” by Ngoc Anh, Cuoc doi van dep sao “How beautiful life is” by Duong Huong Ly, and Hanh khuc ngay va dem “Day and night marching song” by Bui Cong Minh. Phan Huynh Dieu said music and poetry are twin sisters and because of that more than half of his works were poems set to music.

Phan Huynh Dieu’s songs are often romantic with a sense of optimism. The lyrics are simple and easy to remember. Musician Van Dung talks about his colleague: “His songs cover a wide range of themes. He left us with a huge music legacy.”

Musician Phan Huynh Dieu was presented the Ho Chi Minh award for literature and the arts. His songs will forever be remembered by generations of Vietnamese people.
