(VOVworld) – Phu Quoc island in Kien Giang province has been approved to become a centrally-run special administrative-economic zone by 2020, a strategy designed to boost tourism, one of Phu Quoc’s spearhead economic sectors. In response to Vietnam’s National Tourism Year 2016, local travel agencies and service companies are offering promotional programs to attract more tourists.

Known as Pearl Island, Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island. It has many beautiful beaches and a primeval forest. In 2006 UNESCO recognized the Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve, which encompasses Phu Quoc island as a world biosphere reserve. The province plans to turn Phu Quoc into a high-end tourism center by 2020. Funding for tourism development has been mobilized from domestic and foreign investors. Huynh Quang Hung, Vice-chairman of the Phu Quoc district People’s Committee, said approximately 1 million tourists will visit Phu Quoc during National Tourism Year 2016. The People’s Committee and local travel agencies, restaurants, and hotels are offering discounts of 10-30% on tours and services to attract tourists. Mr. Hung said: “Local businesses have responded enthusiastically to our promotional programs. Prices for tourist services, accommodation, and entertainment have been discounted. A Safari recently opened, which we hope will extend tourists’ stays in Phu Quoc.”

The Hoa Binh Vietnam tourist company, which offers travel and hospitality services in Phu Quoc, has cooperated with a number of airlines to offer tourist discounts. Director General Tran Thi Hoa Le said: “We’ve cooperated with Jetstar Pacific Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, and VietJet Air to reduce prices 15-25%. Room rates will be discounted 20-30% for tourists visiting Phu Quoc during National Tourism Year 2016.”

Doan Anh Phuc, executive director of the Anh Duong hotel and restaurant on Tran Hung Dao street, said they are offering discounts on room rates and catering services: “We are offering a 10% discount for tourists staying at our hotel. I believe other businesses are doing the same to lure more tourists.”

Phu Quoc is now hooked up to to the national power grid and Phu Quoc International Airport has been operating for more than a year. All this is part of the region’s plan to become a special administrative-economic zone by 2020.
