The little house of Tran Thi Minh Cuc on Truong Sa island was filled with the talking and laughing of people who came to practice music performances for the national holidays, including the island’s Liberation Day on April 29. Cuc told VOV: "My husband and I felt honored to move to the island and contribute to protecting national maritime sovereignty. We have adapted to the local life. My kids are very healthy as the climate on the island is wonderful. We have kindergartens for kids and are provided with free healthcare check-ups every 6 months. The soldiers always help us whenever we need them."

46 years ago, Song Tu Tay, Big Truong Sa, Son Ca, and Nam Yet islands were liberated by the Vietnam People’s Army. Life on the islands has changed remarkably over the years. Local people now have houses and gardens to grow vegetables and fruits and to raise poultry. Difficulties concerning water supply, vegetables, and communications have been well-addressed. Colonel Thai Dam Sau, former Head of Truong Sa Brigade, said: "Each generation has their own point of view but we all treasure traditions of our country and the army considering them the foundation for us to further grow. We’re determined to fulfil all tasks assigned by the Party and State to deserve our predecessors’ sacrifices and expectation that people nationwide have for us."

Soldiers of Truong Sa Brigade No. 146 of the Naval Region 4 have always firmly defended sovereign waters to ensure peace for the people. The brigade regularly organizes training to improve soldiers’ capability and master their profession and skills in operating modern weapons. Training has also been focused on enhancing the soldiers’ capability to combat in challenging and complex situations. Colonel Luong Xuan Giap, Truong Sa Brigade’s political commissar, said: "We often screen documentaries and showcase photos and materials to make the soldiers better understand their predecessors’ hardships and sacrifices thus nurturing their patriotism and encouraging them to do their best to fulfill any assigned tasks."

Truong Sa island’s infrastructure has been upgraded with a lighthouse, navigation lock, and technical center to ensure safety and assist vessels fishing offshore. Modern facilities have been installed to help improve the local people’s living conditions, contributing to protecting national sea and island.
