(VOVWORLD) - Improving people's living standards has always been one of Hanoi’s goals. Over the years the capital city has promulgated multiple policies and solutions and prioritized resources to support poor households.

“In the past, my house was small and dilapidated. Thanks to financial support from the municipal administration, relatives, and neighbors, I have a new house. I feel very happy and healthier, and will continue to do my utmost to escape poverty,” Nguyen Thi Dong in Soc Son district recalled.
“My family was very glad to receive a pair of a cow and a pull. After one year, the pair gave birth to a calf,” Kieu Thi Mai, another resident in Me Linh district, told VOV.
Dong and Mai are beneficiaries of Hanoi’s livelihood support policy. In Ba Vi and Phuc Thọ districts, which are home to many poor households, poverty reduction has been integrated into new-style rural building programs.
Nguyen Duc Anh, Deputy Chairman of Ba Vi district’s People's Committee, said the number of local poor households has decreased by 5,000 over the past decade. New-style rural building helps people, especially the disadvantaged, enjoy a better life.
16 of Hanoi’s 30 districts have no poor households. This is the result of poverty reduction programs plus allocation of the “Fund for the Poor”.

Over the past 2 years Hanoi authorities have spent more than 4.6 million USD to build 980 “houses of solidarity” and provide a means of production for thousands of poor and near-poor households.
Many policy beneficiaries have obtained loans from the Bank for Social Policy.
Under the new multi-dimensional poverty standards until 2025, Hanoi has 2,100 poor households (0.095% of the population) and 22,200 near-poor households (0.99%). 2,600 of these households need support to repair or build a house.
All of them need a better job or means of production. The municipal government intends to eliminate poverty by 2025.
Deputy Secretary of Hanoi’s Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong said that Hanoi is striving to reduce poverty sustainably, narrow the development gap between the city center and outlying areas, and improve people's lives in all aspects.
“These goals require the municipal government, Fatherland Front, and social organizations to put public interests first and measure all activities of the political system by the benefits, satisfaction, and happiness of the people,” said Phong.
At the launch of “Month for the Poor" in early October, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh said, “This is an opportunity for every agency, organization, and individual in the city to demonstrate a spirit of love through practical acts by supporting poor and near-poor households and people in difficult circumstances with better housing and better livelihoods to help them change their lives.”
