Indonesia to host U20 World Cup 2021
(VOVWORLD) -Indonesia for the first time in history has won the hosting rights for the U20 World Cup 2021, beating out Brazil and Peru. The result was announced following a FIFA meeting on Oct 23-Oct 24, according to Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI).
The result of the FIFA discussion on Oct 23- Oct 24 showed that Indonesia overcome Brazil and Peru to first time become the host of U20 World Cup 2021.
Indonesia, as the host, will have a spot in the finals, the third team in ASEAN to compete in the tournament. Myanmar competed in the U20 World Cup in 2015 and Vietnam in 2017.
8 countries were vying for hosting rights, including 2 ASEAN rivals: Indonesia and the Thailand-Myanmar Coalition. After Thailand’s withdrawal, Indonesia became the only ASEAN candidate. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia-UAE Coalition also withdrew.
Some doubted Indonesia's chances after a violent match between Indonesia and Malaysia marred the first round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
