Prime Minister Dung made the statement at a meeting on Tuesday with the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor to analyze the outcome of cooperation between the government and the Confederation over the past year, and to agree on plans for this year.
Dung said cooperation had contributed to upholding the role of trade unions while mobilizing state employees and workers to improve productivity last year.  He asked the government and the Confederation to boost coordination in law building and to protect the legitimate rights and interests of workers. Prime Minister Dung says:

I’m particularly interested in the fishermen, who we should give the most special treatment. The first and foremost support is credit capital, helping the fishermen to build ships for offshore fishing. Second is assistance from the State Bank of Vietnam so that they don’t have to borrow at high interest rates. Finally is insurance support. The Finance Ministry, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should take into consideration insurance for injuries and lives for all fishermen.

Prime Minister Dung asked the two sides to work together in examining the implementation of recently-issued policies concerning these workers.
