Forum discusses climate-smart food system to cope with climate change
(VOVWORLD) -Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh has called for international assistance for Vietnam’s agriculture to mitigate climate change impacts.
Mr. Doanh made the statement at a policy forum discussing opportunities for climate-smart food system jointly held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Southeast Asian Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security in Hanoi on Wednesday. He said:“Vietnam’s agricultural sector needs help from the international community. Countries and international organizations have helped Vietnam minimize the adverse impacts of climate change to develop agriculture, particularly the Mekong River Delta. We hope that international organizations will continue to work with Vietnamese agencies and localities on more specific projects to contribute more to the harsh and pro-longed fight against climate change in agriculture.”
Localities in the Mekong delta that is predicted to be hardest hit by climate change have shifted 40,000 ha of farming land to aquaculture and growing fruit trees as part of efforts to make climate-smart agriculture. At the same time, they still managed to maintain rice output by increasing productivity and the quality of rice varieties.
Participants presented groups of solutions to changing food producing, processing and consuming methods in agriculture in order to get adapted to climate change.
