Speaking at the ceremony, the chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen The Thao highlighted changes that significantly contributed to the city’s growth, including the city’s expansion in 2008 that increased its total area to 3300 km with a population of more than 7 million. Statistics show that Hanoi achieved an economic growth of 7.88% over the past 9 months and an increase of 6% in its CPI (consumer price index) while the inflation rate is under control. Nguyen The Thao spoke at the event: "The city’s achievements can be attributed to the tireless efforts made by the leaders, civil servants, and people of the capital city through the many patriotic emulation movements originated by President Ho Chi Minh and launched by the Party and State. Such emulative movements have always played a decisive role in the city’s development and defense."
At the ceremony, 10 outstanding citizens and 1000 individuals and collectives were honored for their contributions to the city and society.
