International conference discusses Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa, Truong Sa archipelagoes

(VOVworld) – 100 Vietnamese and foreign scholars gathered in Da Nang to study historical and legal evidence proving Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos. A similar event took place there in April, 2013.

Topics for the 2-day discussion include the role of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos in the East Sea and the effects of disputes over these two archipelagos on Asia-Pacific peace and security. Participants will touch upon how Vietnam has asserted and exercised its sovereignty there under international law, and will share their views on prospects for settling current disputes.

Dr. Pham Dang Phuoc, Headmaster of Pham Van Dong University in Quang Ngai province, told the conference: “In 2013, Pham Van Dong University hosted a similar discussion which impressed attendees. They encouraged us to organize another event this year to further clarify the historical and legal foundation of Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos. I’m sure the conference will draw close attention because of China’s oil rig Haiyang-981 being placed in Vietnam’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.”

An exhibit on Hoang Sa and Truong Sa – an integral part of Vietnam will open to the public at Da Nang museum on Saturday.
