The force’s main tasks include patrolling the country’s waters, monitoring, and inspecting fisheries activities, detecting and handling violations. It’s a key force to participate in natural disaster prevention and control, cooperate in search and rescue works, and protect security, order and national sovereignty in the country’s sea areas. It will be in charge of conducting, proposing and building policies and legal documents in fishery inspections in the waters of Vietnam. The force will join international cooperation activities, and disseminate legal information on aquaculture to individuals, and organizations operating in Vietnam’s maritime territory.

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said the force’s formation is of great importance as it will ensure the execution of fisheries laws and regulations at sea, laying the foundation for the sustainable exploitation and protection of marine resources and the assurance of safety for fishermen and their vessels. Hai says: “The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should work closely with ministries, relevant agencies, and provinces involved, and direct the fisheries surveillance force to operate effectively in line with national and international law, contributing to protecting national sovereignty, sovereignty rights and jurisdiction in the East Sea while realising international commitments that Vietnam has made.

Hai asked the Ministry to build and submit to the government a master plan on the development of the Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance Force until 2020 with a view to 2030.
