(VOVworld) – Vietnam fully respects and implements all its human rights commitments. Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi made the confirmation at a press briefing on Thursday in Hanoi while answering queries related to Vietnam’s recent ratification of UN Convention against Tortures.
Nghi said: "Vietnam has always taken part in and contributed to UN activities in ensuring peace and security, development, and human rights. On November 5^th, the Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed a Decision to authorize the head of the Vietnamese delegation at UN to sign the UN Convention against Tortures. This reflects Vietnam’s respect and implementation all of human rights commitments within the Universal Periodic Review framework as well as VN’s own commitments as the country self nominated to the UN Human Rights Council."

Regarding the Amnesty International accusation that Vietnam had violated international human rights commitments and countered the country’s efforts in becoming a UN Human Rights Council member, Nghi said: "Vietnam has achieved certain results in ensuring human rights in civil, political, economic, cultural and social aspects, which have been acknowledged by the international community. Human rights being practiced plus people’s active involvement in all aspects of the country’s socio-economy, are two important factors for Vietnam’s successful renewal process. Vietnam hopes to take part in the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2014-2016 to further contribute to international efforts in promoting human rights protection around the world."
Luong Thanh Nghi also reiterated that Vietnam believes it is capable of fulfilling its role as a member of UN Human Rights Council and pledged to contribute to improving the Council’s efficiency, transparency, and justice, on the basis of dialogue, equal cooperation and mutual respect.
