This is the first time a Vietnamese candidate won one of the seven ILC seats allocated to the Asia-Pacific region. Ambassador is an expert in international law. He used to be deputy head of the National Border Committee, head of the negotiation team for border agreements with neighboring countries, and a legal advisor to the drafting of Vietnam’s 2012 Law of the Sea. Thao is also a senior diplomat with 40 years of experience. He was Vietnam’s Ambassador to Malaysia from 2011 to 2014 and is currently Ambassador to Kuwait. The nomination of Ambassador Thao for a seat on the ILC demonstrates Vietnam’s desire to contribute to the development of international law and its codification and promote Vietnam’s integration policy.
