Addressing the opening session, Indonesian Foreign minister Retno Marsudi emphasized the need for research and conflict resolution in the East Sea to maintain peace and stability for economic development. He said the East Sea issue can only be resolved on the basis of full awareness on current challenges and active cooperation of all parties. ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh said peace and stability is a firm foundation for a developed and prosperous ASEAN community. Conflict resolution must comply with international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the ASEAN –point principle on the East Sea. He said the ASEAN and China have agreed to set up a hot line to coordinate search and rescue operation and emergency cases. Delegates expected an early completion of a Code of Conduct for Parties in the East Sea between the ASEAN and China.
