(VOVWORLD) - Fishermen in Canh Duong commune in the central province of Quang Binh hosted a whale worshiping ritual and launched a new fishing season last Sunday, the first full moon of the new lunar year.

The whale worshiping ceremony prays for a bumper harvest, luck, safety, favorable weather, peace, prosperity and happiness. Villager Lê Thị Thu said that her family prepares offerings to pray for peace, luck and bountiful catches.
The most important part of the whale worshiping ritual is praising the whale. A document honoring whales protecting fishermen at sea is read by a prestigious senior villager.
The ritual in Canh Duong was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2018.
