(VOVworld) During the country’s development, Vietnam has emphasized agricultural and other rural development, as 70% of its population lives in rural areas. A Party resolution in 2008 considered creating a new rural landscape fundamental to making Vietnam a modern industrialized nation by 2020. VOV will be bringing you a new weekly feature describing the process of building this new rural landscape. This week, we’ll present the current plan and its key tasks.

Vietnam’s rural areas are a large zone, heavily populated and diverse in terms of people and cultures. These places preserve community customs and practices and produce the essential items of daily life. It’s impossible to create an industrialized country when agricultural and rural areas remain antiquated and rural residents live below the poverty line. Consequently, the 10th Party Central Committee issued a Resolution on agriculture, farmers and rural development, calling for the development of a modern socio-economic infrastructure, a more appropriate economic structure, and production models that combine agriculture, industry, and services to create a stable society and improved living standards. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung addressed a recent conference on the issue 'The development of rural areas is a target, a requirement of sustainable development, an urgent mission, and a strategic guideline of the Party, State and people. The direction will create a consensus and be a strength of the entire political system, and society. People’s Committees of provinces and cities should outline projects to develop their rural areas with specific roadmaps, and solutions appropriate to their situation. These will make a tight link among ministries, sectors and provinces to realize the 11-point resolution'.

The Government has made a detailed action plan for implementing the Party’s resolution under which the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is assigned to co-ordinate with relevant agencies to draw up a national target program on new rural development. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, head of the Steering Committee of the program, says rural residents and officials will both experience changes under the program. Mr. Ninh 'Implementing the resolution will be done synchronously but not hastily. According to the Prime Minister’s decision, by 2020 50% of the communes nationwide will conform to the new standards and 20% of all villages in the next 5 years. The set of standards for new rural areas will be applied until the model is complete'.

In the future, a new rural Vietnam will turn out agricultural products with high productivity and quality while retaining the traditional cultures of local people and the harmonious relation between people and nature.
