(VOVWORLD) - In the lead-up to the Lunar New Year (Tet), flower villages nationwide are busy to serve the holiday market. After a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, the Tet demand for flowers and ornamental plants has gone up.

Farmers in My Tho city, Tien Giang province, have been growing flowers for Tet for more than 30 years. Flowers grown in My Phong, Tan My Chanh, Trung An, and Phuoc Thanh commune supply the markets in Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam’s southern provinces.
A month ago, My Tho farmers began taking steps to ensure that their flowers will bloom right at Tet. The work is hard, but the farmers are happy knowing that traders will buy all the flowers they can grow.
Nguyen Van Nam, a marigold grower in Tan My Chanh commune, My Tho city, said, “Traders pay a deposit in advance. The price is the same as always. If we have a bumper crop, our lives will improve.”
These days the flower gardens in Quang Nam province are packed with customers. Tay An, the largest flower growing area in Duy Xuyen district, is particularly busy.
Tran Thi Thu's of Duy Trung commune has nearly 200,000 pots of flowers, 70% of which have already been reserved.
“This year’s flowers are more beautiful than last year’s. Traders have paid deposits in advance and my profits are up. My revenue has surpassed 56,000 USD, nearly half of which is profit. I employ 12 people,” said Thu.
Duy Xuyen district in Quang Nam has 7 hectares growing flowers for Tet, and hundreds of households are growing marigolds and chrysanthemums in hanging pots. On average, one hectare of flowers brings in a net profit of more than 8,500 USD, much more than vegetables or other crops.
Phan Xuan Canh, Chairman of the Duy Xuyen district People's Committee, said that the flower growing area expanded this year while a strong demand has increased local incomes.

Flower growers in Dak Lak province are also busily preparing beautiful flowers for Tet.
On Van Khi of 7A hamlet, Ea Bar commune, Buon Don district, says his family has 170 pots of daisies.
“There are many steps involved – mixing the soil with fertilizers, selecting the best varieties, and keeping the flowers watered,” Khi explained.
This year Nguyen Thi Hieu of hamlet 3, Hoa Xuan commune, Buon Ma Thuot city, has 1,500 square meters of chrysanthemums. She says that after four months of meticulous care, her flowers are growing well and will bloom right at Tet.
She said, “We are pruning the buds. If any buds are too small, we prune them. There are two harvests. The first is on the 22nd day of the lunar month. The second is six days later.”
