Hung Yen prioritizes growing longan trees in new rural development

In the past decade, this fruit has brought high and stable income sources to Nguyen Van Canh’s family as well as other farmers in Hung Yen City’s Kim Dang hamlet. VOV reports…..
Visiting Hung Yen city in July, one can see nothing but fruitful longan gardens ready for harvest. This is attributed to efforts of some local families who have succeeded in applying appropriate techniques in growing longan to ensure fruits of both high productivity and quality despite unfavorable weather conditions. Nguyen Van Canh and his family is a good example. Canh said that different from other kinds of fruits, growing longans would take the first 5 years without harvest. He added that it’s important to wisely combine both traditional and modern knowhow in this job which requires the farmers to closely follow every smallest change of the weather to have timely measures to protect their longan trees. Another local longan grower, Nguyen Van The, told VOV that he learned a lot from Canh’s experience in growing longans: "Canh is a senior longan grower and he has a lot of experience in this field. His family’s longan gardens have brought them stable income over the past years. More and more people in our hamlet have followed his family’s model of longan growing."

Nguyen Van Canh now owns 2 hectare of longan trees. His family’s 300 longan trees are now ready for harvest with an estimated productivity of 20 tonnes, worth around 250,000 USD. His longan farm has generated jobs for dozens of seasonal workers. Nguyen Tuan Viet is a member of Hung Yen City’s Farmers’ Association: "Nguyen Van Canh and his family has set a good example for us to follow in running our own businesses, in this case, our longan farms. Canh has contributed significantly to preserving our precious local breed of longan trees."

Nguyen Van Canh has been honored for his contribution to preserving and developing the local breed of longan trees. Canh said he’s more than happy as Hung Yen longan trees can contribute to the local economic development, thus fulfilling the criteria set in the national program on new rural development: "We are well-aware of preserving our special longan trees to develop the local economy. We understand that it requires passion in order to succeed in doing anything, including the farm work."
Canh’s experiences in growing longan trees have been widely applied in Hung Yen province, contributing to developing the local economy.
