(VOVworld) – As one of the 5 districts nationwide selected by the government as a role model for a national program on new rural development in the 2010-2015 period, Bac Lieu province’s Phuoc Long district has completed the program’s many set targets. This is attributed to the local government’s success in mobilizing people’s contribution to the program in addition to appropriate policies which match local conditions.
Vinh Thanh was the first commune in Phuoc Long district that has reached standards set out in the national new rural development program while 6 other communes of the district are scheduled to follow suit by the end of the year. Tran Hoang Duyen, Phuoc Long district’s Party Secretary, attributed these positive results to the Party and State’s customized policies to meet local conditions and needs: "The program’s success largely depends on the national and local authorities’ determination to implement it resolutely and transparently while ensuring people’s consensus during the implementation. Only by so doing can we improve the local people’s living standards and uplift the rural areas."

The district has succeeded in developing its agriculture and aquaculture to boost the district’s economy, earning the local people an average income of 1700 USD/per person annually, up 2.4 times from 2009. The local authorities have also encouraged people to develop small-scale businesses and services. Tran Van Thong resides in Phuoc Thanh hamlet, Phuoc Long district: "Our family runs a small business in addition to aquaculture cultivation. We now enjoy better living conditions thanks to the national new rural development program with a better irrigation system to serve our aquaculture industry, and better roads for us to travel. We no longer suffer from poor living conditions and low production and we’re very happy for this."
The program’s initial success has encouraged the people of Phuoc Long to further contribute to local socio-economic development. They have volunteered to contribute their land, money, and labor to implementing the national new rural development program. Phan Van Dung lives in Tong 3A hamlet, Vinh Thanh commune, Phuoc Long district: "The program has won the people’s trust and support because it has helped improve their living standards. My family donated our land to make roads to facilitate local travel."
