Local residents contributed their land, money, and labor to pave new roads and upgrade the local irrigation systems. Duy Son farmers have rezoned their fields and applied advanced technologies in their agricultural production. Bui Quy Hoang lives in Tra Chau hamlet, Duy Son commune: "We have responded enthusiastically to every movement launched by the government. We understand that such programs and movements will ultimately benefit us and improve the living conditions of our children."

Communal authorities have organized a number of vocational training classes for farmers and provided them with latest technologies to help improve their production. The number of poor households in Duy Son has dropped up to 3.5% annually. Nguyen Tan Phuc is Chairman of Duy Son communal Fatherland Front: "This initial success is attributed to the local people and authorities’ consensus in implementing the national new rural development program.  Duy Son has taken the lead in Duy Xuyen district’s new rural development movement in many years. The local people are very eager to contribute to the building of new rural areas."

The number of poor households in Duy Son reduced from 187 to 50 in 2014. The commune now has standard cultural and sports centers. Duy Son is speeding up efforts to complete the remaining new rural criteria including reducing the number of poor households and upgrading the local traffic and irrigation systems to become Quang Nam’s first commune to be recognized as a new-style rural area.
