Students volunteer to assist rural development in Phu Yen

(VOVworld) – This summer, students of Phu Yen Pedagogic University joined farmers in the mountainous commune of Xuan Lanh, Dong Xuan district, Phu Yen province, as part of a national program of new rural development. VOV’s Lan Anh reports.

20 student volunteers came to Xuan Lanh commune to help the local farmers this summer. They were very excited by the novel experiences their volunteer activities presented. Ho Sy Hao is a fourth year student at the University: "We are very happy that we can help the local people. Our major tasks are paving the local roads, teaching the local students, and raising local awareness of the importance of maintaining a green, clean environment."
Another 4th year student, Trinh Thi Phuong Loan, said she spent most of her time in Xuan Lanh teaching the local children: "We dedicated our best efforts to teaching the local children and this was a good opportunity for us to practice our future job. Some children told me that they love going to school but they had to do household chores and had no time to study. They were very excited to study with us and in return taught us many things about the local life which helped improve our social skills."

In addition to morning and afternoon classes, the volunteer students also organized entertainment activities for the children in the evening. In the large yard in front of the commune’s community house, the children happily sang and danced with their young volunteer teachers. Phuong Loan told VOV she learned a lot and felt more mature after this trip: "The volunteer activities seem to have breathed new life into this remote area. Everybody was so happy and loved us so much that they offered us everything they had, including fruits and other food. My parents told me they think I’m more mature now with new social skills I learned from the trip and I hope to take part in more volunteer activities whenever I can."

This was the first time that Huynh Thanh Truc, a third-year student who had known nothing but studying, took part in volunteer activities. Getting involved in farm work helped Truc understand the peasants’ hardlife. Truc joined her schoolmates in visiting every local household to encourage the children to go to school: "I’ve learned a lot about the importance of self-reliance, teamwork, and patience in making us better future teachers. Teaching the local children has improved my confidence and skill in speaking in front of people."

The volunteer students also raised funds to repair some local public works. Phuong Loan told VOV: "We’ve raised some money, not much, to repair the gate of the local primary school and pave the road leading to the school entrance to make it easier for the children to get to school."

The meaningful volunteer activities have given some unforgettable memories to the students of Phu Yen University and taught them that good deeds performed for the community can make them feel loved and satisfied.
