Since 2011, Regions of Climate Action (R20) summits have been held in multiple countries. R20 has representatives in Asia, Europe, America, and Africa. The Austrian World Summit draws politicians, scholars, scientists, and representatives of corporations and NGOs.

In adequate climate change response

Climate change has been accelerating since the beginning of the year. The World Meteorological Organization reported on March 28 that the physical signs and socio-economic impacts of climate change are worsening as record greenhouse gas concentrations drive global temperatures towards increasingly dangerous levels. The report shows that record sea level rise and exceptionally high land and ocean temperatures over the past four years are undeniable. Extreme weather phenomena have occurred regularly since the beginning of the year. The tropical typhoon Idai caused heavy flooding and claimed lives in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. Australia has experienced its hottest months in history. Heat waves and extremely hot weather are occurring more regularly. Climate change has impacted the implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Global climate change response has been undermined by US withdrawal and other countries rejecting the UN’s roadmap on climate change.

Continuing efforts

Despite the lack of unity, the UN and many countries have not given up. Last December the World Bank announced a fund of 200 billion USD for global response to climate change from 2021 to 2025. The money will be spread equally to projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect people from severe floods, typhoons, and droughts. Students in 130 countries have organized marches to urge their leaders to take immediate action on climate change. This is the first time young people worldwide have rallied behind a common message to protect their future.

Conferences and dialogues on climate change have been held in many countries. Three major events took place in May. Representatives of the Pacific Islands Forum and UN Secretary General António Guterres discussed climate change response, development, and climate safety solutions. The International Conference on Climate Action took place in Germany last Thursday with 1,000 delegates participating. The conference committed to sustainable development and climate adaptation. Building climate-friendly cities will be the key to reaching ambitious climate targets.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned that global climate change will cause an estimated loss of 21 trillion USD by 2050. Despite the challenges, further global efforts must be made to protect the earth and minimize losses.
