COVID-19 pandemic: The other side of the coin

(VOVWORLD) - After three months of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic by quarantining suspected virus carriers, treating symptomatic patients, and encouraging everyone else to practice social distancing, Vietnam has so far effectively contained the disease and has received international praise for its disease response. Despite its negative economic impact, the epidemic has brought with it some heartening realizations.

The fight against COVID-19 has increased the Vietnamese people’s trust in the Party, the political system, and leaders who have given top priority to people’s lives. They have spared no effort in seeking effective prevention and control measures and have been ready to sacrifice economic gains to ensure people’s health.

Two things that have emerged from the COVID-19 fight are the strong leadership of the Party and State and the unity of the people, which have combined to control the epidemic better than most other countries have been able to do. Putting aside their individual interests, every Vietnamese has joined the fight against the virus as if fighting an enemy, and strictly following the rules and recommendations of the government.

Everyone in society has worked together to combat the epidemic. Some creative individuals have invented new products such as decontamination booths, automatic sanitizer dispensers, and rice ATM machines. Nguyen Manh Hung, Director of the Thai Ha Book company, installed the first rice ATM in Hanoi to support disadvantaged people amid the COVID-19 epidemic. Hung said: "I had lived through days with nothing to eat. I know many street vendors survive on their daily earnings. Due to social distancing rules, they have had to stay at home and can’t earn a living. I have seen people burst into tears when they received free rice at the ATM."

During the epidemic, streets have been cleaner and less crowded and people have been more disciplined. People hope to see more of the same when the epidemic is over.
